Riserva della Famiglia - Altavigna

It is a pure Aglianico, dense, full-bodied and destined to a very long evolution over the years.
The hand-picked grapes are crushed and destemmed and fermented spontaneously using only indigenous yeasts in steel containers with maceration on the skins for about 25 days. Aging in 225 liter barriques for a period of 20 months and then for about a two years in the bottle. Intense ruby red color, on the nose complex aromas of ripe red fruits, including cherry and sweet spices, hints of tobacco up to iron and animal textures.
In the mouth it is full bodied, incisive with tannins well present and supported by a freshness that leads back to balsamic notes.
The “Riserva della Famiglia” will surely express all its power with the evolution in bottle after many years.

Historical background

The name of the native town of this wine excellence, Aglianico di Taurasi, originates from the ancient Taurasia, destroyed by the Romans in 268 B.C. In this town and in the Campi Taurasini in the years 181-180 B.C. The Romans moved a population of Celtic stock and these, finding the soil very fertile, resumed the cultivation of the “Greek” vine. Aglianico is a difficult grape variety to cultivate and vinify, with very incisive tannins that take time to soften.

Production area

The production area of the DOCG Taurasi, embraces a series of hills or foothills between 400 and 700 metres above sea level and includes the entire administrative territory of the 17 municipalities of Taurasi, Bonito, Castelfranci, Castelveteresul Calore, Fontanarosa, Lapio, Luogosano, Mirabella Eclano, Montefalcione, Montemarano, Montemiletto, Paternopoli, Pietradefusi, Sant’Angelo all’Esca, San Mango sul Calore, Torre Le Nocelle and Venticano in the province of Avellino, which run along the course of the Calore river and are part of the Apennine ridge.

Land

The soils have young and immature profiles and most often rest directly on their pedogenetic substrates, either hard and compact rock or soft clayey and sandy rocks. I soils in the municipality of Taurasi, have a high presence of clay, which preserves the soils from summer drought and therefore allows a more regular ripening of the grapes and a normal level of acidity. The richness in potassium and magnesium gives the wines intensity of aroma, good structure and balance.

Climate

The climate is continental with large temperature ranges and low rainfall. Sunny days are very high as are frequent spring frosts, even late frosts. The daily hikes are, from July to September, very much increased.
